Energy commodities are separate markets
The catalogue includes WTI, Brent, Henry Hub gas, RBOB gasoline and the HO contract for ULSD. They represent different products, regions and contract terms.
US natural gas is not European TTF, and an oil barrel is different from an energy unit or gallon of refined fuel. Check units before comparing absolute numbers.
Production, weather and refining
Output, transport and storage shape supply. Seasonal weather can change heating and electricity consumption, while travel affects fuel demand. Inventories help balance timing but do not remove regional constraints.
Refineries turn crude into products with their own demand. Crude costs and a product’s selling price can move differently when capacity, maintenance or specifications change.
Futures compared with energy companies
Continuous histories switch delivery months. Rollover effects differ from the movement of one unchanged position. Trading status and observation time help distinguish an open market from a retained last quote.
Exxon Mobil and Chevron combine production and processing with company costs, investment and financing. Their shares are different from direct futures exposure. The commodity catalogue provides the wider context.
