Three groups of commodity markets
Commodities are inputs used in manufacturing, energy and consumption. Datisto groups them into metals, energy and agriculture. These are views of one catalogue rather than duplicate instruments.
The charts follow futures with defined contract specifications. They are not offers to buy physical goods immediately. Gold, WTI crude and wheat have different delivery terms and demand.
Units, delivery months and volume
A price can be quoted per ounce, pound, barrel, bushel or energy unit. Selected cent-based source quotes are converted consistently into displayed dollars. Volume remains contracts, not the total physical commodity produced.
Continuous history switches between delivery contracts. A rollover can create a step because those contracts price different delivery dates. The plotted percentage is not necessarily the return from holding one unchanged futures position.
Supply, stocks and demand
Availability depends on output, location, inventories, transport and customer needs. A shipping interruption differs from weaker final consumption. Weather can affect crops and energy demand in different ways.
Use percentage comparisons over matching periods and inspect the actual benchmark. Watchlisted commodities remain together across categories, while their trading sessions and observation times can differ. The details explain each reference and its relationship to downstream products.
