Natural gas
NG · NYMEX · futuresHenry Hub and the quoted energy unit
The NG series follows US Henry Hub natural-gas futures. Its unit is USD per million British thermal units, or MMBtu. This is an energy measure rather than a simple price for a cubic metre of gas.
Henry Hub is different from the European TTF market. Regional infrastructure, transport and liquefaction capacity can prevent prices from moving together.
Weather, storage and production
Heating and electricity demand can change sharply with the weather. Stored gas helps balance seasonal consumption, while production and pipeline capacity determine how readily supply reaches customers.
Storage figures require a seasonal comparison. The same inventory level can carry a different meaning near the beginning of winter than at the end of the heating season.
Different delivery months
Winter and summer contracts can price different anticipated conditions. A continuous-series rollover can therefore create a step without the same movement in one unchanged contract. The chart is not a direct history of a household utility bill. WTI offers another energy commodity, while Exxon Mobil and Chevron include related corporate operations.
