Chevron’s energy activities

Chevron combines oil and gas production with downstream and other energy-related activities. Its economics include extraction costs, transport, refining and the investment needed to operate assets over time.

The shares are different from a direct oil-price exposure. A company has financing decisions, operational risks and a portfolio of projects whose results do not move in perfect proportion to one benchmark.

Projects, realised prices and margins

Production volumes, realised selling prices and operating costs shape upstream earnings. A development project can consume cash before it begins producing. Refining responds to product demand, input costs and available capacity.

The timing of major projects and changes in the asset portfolio can make results differ from another integrated energy company during the same commodity-price cycle.

Reading CVX with the commodity market

Brent, WTI and natural gas show different markets. Compare Exxon Mobil with attention to business mix. Dividends and buybacks require cash and company decisions. The CVX price chart does not count these as automatically reinvested income.
