Coffee C follows arabica

The KC series follows ICE Futures U.S. Coffee C futures, a benchmark for specified arabica coffee. It is different from a robusta contract and does not represent every origin, grade or roasting blend.

The chart uses USD per pound after conversion from US-cent source quotations. Volume remains the number of traded contracts. A local physical purchase can include a premium or discount for origin and quality.

Weather and the supply cycle

Weather can affect both the size and quality of harvests. Coffee production has biological and investment cycles that limit an immediate response to higher prices. Inventories and transport influence how a harvest change reaches the market.

Currencies in producing countries can affect selling decisions, while delivery conditions can influence particular contract months more than a distant expected crop.

From green beans to a finished drink

Roasting, labour, packaging, logistics and retail costs contribute to the price of coffee sold to consumers. Procurement contracts can delay that effect. Cocoa and sugar offer other agricultural markets, with different growing conditions and contract specifications. A continuous KC history can contain rollover price steps.
