Cocoa and the CC futures series

Cocoa is an input to cocoa products and chocolate. The CC series follows ICE Futures U.S. contracts and is quoted in USD per metric tonne. It is different from the London contract with another currency and delivery arrangement.

Unlike the displayed coffee and sugar series, this price is not presented in dollars per pound. Check units before comparing absolute values.

Harvest conditions and processing

Weather, crop disease, farm productivity and the ability to bring beans to market can affect supply. Production responses take time because growing trees and improving farms are not immediate adjustments.

Processors’ demand and available inventories influence how much a supply disruption changes prices. The amount harvested, the amount arriving at ports and the amount processed describe different stages.

Cocoa and the price of chocolate

A finished product includes ingredients, processing, packaging, labour and distribution beyond cocoa beans. Consumer prices need not follow futures immediately or by the same percentage. Continuous histories can include delivery-contract changes, and the volume under the chart counts contracts rather than tonnes consumed by chocolate manufacturers.
