Micron Technology
MU · NASDAQ · USAMicron and memory products
Micron manufactures memory and storage products, including DRAM and NAND. Different devices and workloads need different capacities, performance and power characteristics. High-bandwidth memory adds another important product category for demanding computing systems.
The memory market is not one uniform product. A shift in the mix of technologies and customers can change revenue and margins even when total output moves differently.
Supply, demand and inventory cycles
Manufacturing capacity takes time and capital to expand. Demand changes can therefore create periods of shortage followed by excess supply. Customers’ inventory decisions may amplify those movements.
Prices, manufacturing costs, production yields and the pace of introducing new processes all influence profitability. Higher shipment volume is not sufficient if the selling price falls faster.
Reading MU within the chip industry
Nvidia represents part of computing demand, TSMC a different manufacturing model and ASML equipment used in production. Micron’s share price can anticipate a memory-cycle turn before it appears in reported earnings, which makes the distinction between current results and expectations especially useful.
