TSMC
TSM · NYSE · USATSMC manufactures chips for other companies
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company specialises in contract semiconductor manufacturing. Customers design chips, while TSMC provides manufacturing technologies and capacity. This differs from a company whose main activity is selling its own processor designs.
The page follows the US-listed TSM depositary instrument. Its dollar history is different from a local Taiwan share-price series; the instrument structure, currency and trading hours matter.
Technology, yield and capacity utilisation
Advanced manufacturing requires substantial investment in fabrication plants and equipment. Yield, the proportion of usable chips, influences economics. A plant can retain significant fixed costs when customer orders slow.
Demand from phones, data centres and other electronics creates different requirements for manufacturing processes and packaging. Total chip counts alone do not explain the financial result.
Reading the manufacturing cycle
Nvidia and AMD show demand from chip designers, while ASML supplies important manufacturing technology. Geopolitics, export rules and the cost of new locations also affect valuation. A TSM dollar chart does not directly measure factory capacity or the return on local shares in another currency.
