Amazon
AMZN · NASDAQ · USAAmazon combines several business models
Amazon operates retail and marketplace services, logistics, advertising and AWS cloud infrastructure. A dollar of additional sales in one segment does not necessarily produce the same profit as a dollar in another.
Marketplace activity can generate service and advertising income without Amazon owning every item sold. Separating first-party retail from services makes the reported results easier to understand.
Delivery costs and computing capacity
Fulfilment networks depend on warehouses, transport, staffing and the density of orders. Faster delivery can improve customer use while creating additional operating costs. AWS has a different investment cycle centred on data centres and computing equipment.
Customer demand, utilisation and the cost of expansion determine when these investments contribute to cash generation. Revenue growth can therefore move differently from free cash flow.
Putting AMZN’s chart into context
A reaction after earnings may reflect margins or the next investment plan rather than the headline sales figure. Walmart helps compare retail economics; Microsoft and Alphabet offer cloud comparisons. Choose the relevant part of the business rather than treating Amazon as a single-product company.
