Berkshire Hathaway
BRK-B · NYSE · USABerkshire as a holding company
Berkshire Hathaway owns businesses across insurance, rail transport, energy, industry and services, as well as an investment portfolio. The page follows Class B shares, identified as BRK-B in the data source.
The company is different from a fund that simply tracks a list of quoted equities. Controlled operating businesses contribute significant economics and have their own capital needs.
Insurance and available capital
Insurers receive premiums before paying some future claims. Funds held in the meantime are often called float. Their usefulness depends on underwriting discipline and the eventual cost of settling claims.
Railways and energy operations have another model involving physical infrastructure, maintenance, investment and regulation. A consolidated profit figure alone cannot describe the condition of every subsidiary.
Portfolio revaluation and share classes
Changes in quoted investment values can move reported earnings without a corresponding sale. Separate operating performance from market revaluation. JPMorgan Chase offers another financial business and Apple a different operating model. BRK-B’s chart is neither the performance of one portfolio holding nor the same security as BRK.A.
