What a stock index measures

An index summarises a selected group of stocks using defined rules. The S&P 500 covers large US companies, the Nasdaq 100 large non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq, and the Dow Jones thirty major US businesses. The DAX follows large German companies.

Index values are expressed in points. They are neither share prices nor the amount needed to buy the entire market. A higher point level does not make one index more expensive than another.

Constituents, weights and dividends

Selection and weighting both affect performance. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 use market capitalisation with their own rules, while the Dow Jones uses share prices as weights. A company’s movement therefore affects each benchmark differently.

The S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and Dow Jones series shown here are price indices. The standard DAX performance index includes reinvested dividends. This distinction matters for long-term comparisons. A tracking fund’s return also depends on fees, currency and replication.

Observations and main-market sessions

Daily change compares the latest value with the previous session. Monthly charts use available daily observations. Weekends and holidays do not produce invented points; the quote timestamp identifies the age of each value.

Trading status and countdowns follow the main US equity and Xetra sessions, rather than index futures hours. Times are shown in Prague time. An index can receive its final value after the main market closes. Explore individual businesses in the stock catalogue, including Apple and Microsoft.
