Reading a portfolio value-change breakdown
Compare two original days from the same history. Separate quantities, native prices, FX and cash; keep the residual and coverage differences visible.
1. Select two original days
In Portfolio first load, review and explicitly apply unified history. Under Explain the value change select an Opening day and a later Closing day. Both must belong to the applied history; this panel acquires no new prices.
Review original values shows both whole values, known portions, valued holding/cash counts and original day boundaries. Review alone does not calculate the breakdown. Only Calculate value-change breakdown creates a result.
2. Read numerical contributions in their defined order
The bridge follows quantity → native price → FX rate. Cash-balance change is separate; its currency movement belongs to FX. Interaction terms are already assigned to the following price or FX component and are never added twice.
The chart shows every contribution, including Unattributed residual and Rounding difference. The sum matches the compared change only when the result explicitly confirms reconciliation. Exact amounts and their origin remain in the table and detail; the chart is not a separate calculation. Any difference between the total change and the sum of individually rounded row changes is disclosed separately above the table; it is not added again to chart contributions.
3. Distinguish whole values from known portions
If either endpoint is incompletely valued, the result is named Known-portions comparison only. Check both endpoint coverages, opening-only/closing-only members and unavailable members. The difference can include coverage changes; it is not a complete portfolio change or return.
A new or closed holding, changed source, native unit or unit basis may prevent attribution. An available difference remains in the residual with a reason. Proven absence may establish zero held value, never zero price. Missing prices or FX are not filled; USDT and BTC are not USD.
4. Inspect all members and their origins
All holdings and cash balances contains every holding and cash account in the comparison. Pagination changes presentation only. Select a member or endpoint value and use the single shared detail to inspect original quantities, prices, units, fixings, source identities and any residual reason.
Original opening sources and Original closing sources open the existing source detail for that exact day and member. Matching tickers do not prove identity.
5. Whole breakdown and the same history
Whole value-change breakdown JSON and CSV retain all members, contributions, coverage, methodology and the unchanged original history with sources once. The current page and open detail do not narrow the file. Download verifies the same originals and current access, never substitutes newer prices.
When the same input cannot be currently verified, the breakdown is not displayed as valid. Verify the same breakdown rechecks original inputs; a retained draft or earlier file does not override current access or source conditions.
6. Value change is not investment return
Deposits, withdrawals, transfers and quantity changes are not themselves gains. This numerical bridge is not TWR, Modified Dietz, market causation or complete dividend/fee attribution. For a separate approximate return use Period return from this history with its own cash-flow review; missing inputs remain unavailable.
This is a guide to Datisto. Private features require sign-in and access to your own data. Personal models use your assumptions; availability and permitted use of source data are checked with the particular result. This is not investment advice.
