Reading period performance from original portfolio history
Review two complete original endpoints and every recorded external flow. Approximate period return separates value change from contributions and shows its calculation and limits.
1. Select two original days from the same history
In Portfolio first prepare and explicitly apply Unified history. In Period return from this history choose an Opening day and a later Closing day from that same report. Values are not entered manually and today’s price is not added to the past.
Both endpoints need complete nonnegative values in the portfolio’s actual base currency. A known portion is not the whole portfolio. Missing USDT/BTC conversion, a missing price or an overly wide original amount is not rounded or inferred to make a return available.
2. Review the whole period and external flows
Choose Review period and external flows. The review shows original opening and closing values, coverage and all relevant recorded deposits, withdrawals, security receipts and own transfers with inclusion or exclusion reasons. Reviewing or changing a date does not calculate a new return.
Opening value already includes the opening day’s cutoff. A flow exactly at that instant is therefore not subtracted again. Only flows after opening through closing inclusive are included; a flow exactly at closing has zero time weight.
3. Distinguish contributions, transfers and corrections
A deposit is a positive external contribution and a withdrawal a negative one. A transfer between own accounts does not increase external capital. Flow membership belongs to the selected closing day, not automatically the last day of the wider history; a later reversal does not rewrite an earlier close.
If a reversal inside the period cancels an event from opening or earlier, it may change the basis of opening value itself. This first model marks that correction unsupported and retains the original references. It does not invent a withdrawal or turn an accounting correction into investment loss.
4. Explicitly calculate the approximate return
After review choose Calculate period return. Modified Dietz compares value change with net external contributions and their time weights. It displays value change, net contributions, return numerator and weighted capital so the percentage can be assessed.
This is an approximate nonannualized return for the selected period. Zero contributions are not missing data; a missing historical amount is not zero. Nonpositive weighted capital and unsupported included flows have specific unavailability reasons.
5. Inspect original flows and their weights
The table and shared flow detail use the same result. Review the exact original amount, unit, economic instant, record and related reversals. Time weight uses the actual distance to period end; its original time numerator and denominator remain inspectable.
The first model accepts only known consistent cash flows in exactly the base currency. A foreign-currency deposit needs its own historical value, and a security receipt cannot be valued using cost basis or today’s price. An opening or closing fixing does not repair those gaps.
6. Download the whole result from the same inputs
Whole period return JSON or CSV preserves both original endpoints, every included and excluded flow, weights, reasons and result. The complete original financial history is attached once. Selecting a flow, page or day does not truncate the export.
Changing days or inputs requires fresh explicit review and calculation; a late old reply cannot replace them. Display and download require current access to the same ledger and sources. A file preserves provenance and methodology, not a login or live authority.
7. A reference is not exact TWR or then-known knowledge
The model uses original end-of-day references, which may not coincide with a deposit or withdrawal. Calculation uses 48 significant digits with disclosed numerical rounding; the result does not claim arbitrary mathematical exactness.
TWR would need valuations immediately before and after every external flow. This view does not claim TWR, CAGR, a benchmark comparison, tax or complete corporate actions. Later-recorded corrections and histories captured now do not prove what the application knew then.
This is a guide to Datisto. Private features require sign-in and access to your own data. Personal models use your assumptions; availability and permitted use of source data are checked with the particular result. This is not investment advice.
